THE AUTHOR

Edgar Allan Poe (1809~1849), as we knew, was good at writing ”Gothic novel” such as “The Fall of the House of Usher”; besides, he was also the originator of the “detective story”. His work, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, was generally acknowledged as the first detective novel. Unfortunately, however, his life was short and full of adversities; even so, he still influenced on the literary circles all over the world because of his outstanding contribution.

This time I chose ”The Masque of the Red Death” to be the stuff of my book report because its content was succinct, which suited the one, like me, whose mother tongue was not English, but, in spite of that, it was very difficult to completely understand this story, as its background and the writing style of Edgar Allan Poe were a bit of unfamiliar to me. Hence I hoped that if you, a kind and thoughtful teacher in the school, found any sort of mistakes, please pretend not to see that. I would be grateful to you!

THE SUMMARY

The background of this story was a country suffering from a horrible and lethal disease called the “Red Death”. This disease made the dominions half depopulated, but the owner of the dominions, the Prince Prospero, did not fear it at all, because he had decided to abandon his dominions and hide himself, lighted-hearted friends and dames in a deep seclusion of one of thus castellated abbeys. The abbey was an extensive and magnificent structure.

In the abbey, all of the people reveled and danced all day long; absolutely none of them worried about the “Red Death”. A stranger, nevertheless, suddenly appeared. He was tell and gaunt and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave, and always stalked to and for among the waltzers with a slow and solemn movement. His behavior was so odd that everyone noticed him and took him as the typical case of the Red Death, and finally the eyes of Prince Prospero fell on this spectral image, too.

Prince Prospero thought this strange figure insulting him, which made him extremely angry. He wanted to know who the figure was and punish him for his conduct.

After a chase, the Prince Prospero was killed by his dagger; to the end, the others found that the figure was just the cerement and a corpselike mask. Afterwards it was said that the figure came like a thief in the night kills the others one by one, and finally Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.

WHAT I GOT AFTER READING THIS SHORT STORY

In ”The Masque of the Red Death” there were two things to hint the pain of the people outside the abbey. One was the clock of ebony; the other was the strange figure. Now I would show what I got after reading this story by introducing the two things:

the clock of ebony

In this abbey, all the designs were abnormal. The tastes of the duck were peculiar. His plans were bold and fiery. However, the clock, no matter its appearance or sounds, did not conform to the tastes at all. People inside the abbey obviously did not like the clock, because the sounds of the clock would break their dreams. They merely indulged in the world they created. Hence when they heard the sounds of the clock, they would feel uneasy and stopped what they did, which meant even if they were in such a safe and luxurious place, they still could not forget and disregard the pain of the people outside. I thought the author created such a thing was to compare the different conditions of the story; therefore to remind the people inside how suffering people outside were.

the strange figure

None of the people knew who the figure was; that is, the figure was not invited by the Prince Prospero. Now that he was not one of the invitees, there must be a special intention in his emergence the dames and the others viewed him as the incarnation of the Red Death, because of his behaviors and appearance; for these reasons, I would think if the clock of ebony could be taken as a reminder, the figure must be the embodiment of the revenge. Fist of all, the figure just went around those in the abbey. I thought he tried to warn all of them and gave them an ultimatum, whereas, all of them just feared him and pretended that there was nothing happened. At the last, the Prince Prospero also noticed the strange figure, but he did not think why the figure dressed so; on the contrary, he was very angry and wanted to kill the figure because his bold action, but, ad finem, the Prince Prospero was the one who dead. When he was killed, none of his light-hearted friend or dames helped him because of the fear of the Red Death.

Briefly speaking, what the story said was we could not just merely want safety and comfort of our own; contrarily, we should care and help those in the mire. The idea was simple and, but, under the author’s arrangement, the story covered a mystic atmosphere. I deemed that was why Eagar Allan Poe could influence on the literary circles all over the world and his novels could be handed down such long time.

-- end --

p.s. From the beginning , I thought ”The Masque of the Red Death” would not as famous as other works of Eagar Allan Poe, but in the course of preparing this book report, I found this story had been adapted for a movie and there were a PC game called ”The Masque of the Red Death”. I thought this special finding could be taken as an unexpected result!
